Microsoft's Newest Gadget: Skinput
May 3rd 2010 12:30
Chris Harris of Microsoft Research is one innovative dude. He's created a working prototype that projects a keyboard, dial pad, and interactive screen similar to that of a smart phone onto a hand or arm. In the video above you can see him working his prototype which he has dubbed Skinput.
By measuring vibrations with an arm band, the "phone", if you can call it that, can deduce which area of the arm or hand you are touching and carry out the command associated with that portion of the body. Everything from checking email to making calls would be possible with this phone, and it would all be done without ever laying a finger on the actual device.
Pretty clever, until you see the fairly conspicuous projector he's toting on his arm. Ok, it's a prototype, but if the finished product looks anything like the contraption he's got consuming his arm, sales are either going to be real low, or people are going to start looking like robot hybrids.
