Naomi, the safari suit and the reptile!

September 10th 2006 05:54
THE funniest moment on Australian TV this past week wasn't in Ricky Gervais's new offering Extras or even in some of our home-grown comedy shows.
At Media Blotch our unanimous vote goes to Naomi (How's My Hair?) Robson, squinting at the autocue while wearing a khaki suit with a reptile on her shoulder. Hilarious!
She was presenting that discredited infotainment show Today Tonight live to camera outside the late Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. And amidst the media frenzy, she once again managed to reach the pinnacle of high farce.
It could have been a scene from Frontline, that brilliant 90s series that so effectively satirised the beat-up world of tabloid TV marketed under the guise of current affairs.

Of course, Today Tonight and its rival in the 6.30pm timeslot, A Current Affair, inspired Frontline. And one member of the Working Dog team that produced that series was recently heard to comment that the rubbish appearing on these shows now is even more appalling - a decade later.
The blatant set-ups, miracle diets - and our Naomi's raised-eyebrow indignation at another shonky tradesman - you know what we mean.
Here at Media Blotch we have a fervent wish that commentators in the print media, who often slam these shows, will now stop referring to them as current affairs. This just perpetuates the myth.
The TV gtuide listings should read: 6.30pm. Infotainment.
Now, we expect our fellow media monitor Media Watch (ABCTV, 9.15pm) will tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 11) cast a very critical eye over the unseemly media scrum at the zoo, and elsewhere, following Irwin's death.
The Australian (Sept. 7) suggested: "the hottest media property is now footage of Irwin's death and an interview with his widow".

But for us, the enduring memory of the coverage will be Naomi, the Hostess with the Mostest Makeup, that safari suit ... and the reptile. How apt!.

[SIZE=5]Yeah! She sure is funny. I remember Frontline and she could have been straight out of that series, playing that reporter called Brooke.
