Media Blotch Alert!
January 7th 2009 22:23
If you ever:
watch a sneaky soap opera
flick through a magazine at the hair dresser/waiting room
catch the evening news
gorge yourself on popcorn at the latest blockbuster
question the reality of Reality TV
listen to the radio in the car
get drawn in my tabloid headlines
get lyrics stuck in your head
complain about gendered advertising
or
use the internet to read other people's opinions on things
(gotcha)
Then you have been touched by The Media. Contrary to what some theories suggest, media consumers know their shit. We may have voted in some dodgy Idol finalists, we may have a weakness for celebrity gossip and we may sometimes value sport/fashion etc over the hard news, but we readers, watchers, listeners and observers know our media well. And we know when the media do us wrong. So stay tuned for discussions on the media, high culture, low culture, pop culture, raunch culture, blog culture... and keep the discussion going by commenting below!
**If you're wondering why I am at all any authority on this subject area, allow me to give you a brief lo-down on me. I am studying media at university, I write freelance for magazines and journals, I teach drama to teenage girls and I write/perform comedy. As a fledgling journalist, just getting my bearings, I have a fresh take on the industry and I haven't fully crossed over from being consumer to producer (though this distinction is more and more blurred! more on that later)
Peace out
