I Can't Even Stick to a Diet for a Week; 17 Year Old Pulls Off Elaborate Social Experiment
April 25th 2011 08:37
Gabby Rodriguez is pretty much like every other senior high schooler at her Washington High School. Except that she's probably the best liar in the world. Or at least in Washington.
For six months of her senior year, she pretended to be pregnant. Why, you ask, would anyone want to be pretend to pregnant? For her senior project of course. Seriously. Did she know you can just write up a paper, and they're like 'yeah, whatevs, here's a diploma get out of our school.'
Rodriquez's social experiment required some serious fabrication. Especially considering only a small handful of individuals knew she wasn't actually pregnant. Her mother, one of her siblings, boyfriend, best friend and the principal of her school were the only people that were aware that her 'pregnancy' was for research purposes only. Not even her other siblings or family members new that the baby was a lie.
Over the next six months she created the infant illusion using loose shirts, and a wire mesh and cotton baby bump. Purportedly her baby boy would be due just two months after graduation. In the mean time, she observed and recorded her peers' reactions towards her new status as expectant mother. The rate of teen pregnancies rise, especially among the hispanics that make up 85% of her school, are a big part of why she decided on carrying out this experiment.
She outed herself at an assembly in front of her whole school during her presentation titled "Rumors and Stereotypes". She began the presentation by having students and teachers read cards she had made with different rumors and comments she had heard about herself over the last six months. One of which stated "Her attitude is changing, and it might be because of the baby or she was always this annoying and I never realized it." She then removed her baby bump to the astonishment of her entire school.
Gabby has plans to attend college in the fall and says that real babies of the non-cotton and wire mesh variety or not on her horizon anytime soon.
All I have to say is the girl's got balls. Really. If people so much as look at me wrong, I'm checking window reflections for bogies. Hey, we can't all be inspiring. I'll leave it up to those who are a little more qualified, and write them up a nice little article. That'll be my contribution.
